Social activist Anna Hazare will now focus on garnering support for the Jan Lokpal Bill, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to take place in 2014. “Lokpal lao nahi to jao” will be the slogan that will be launched by Team Anna. Hazare briefed reporters at Ralegan-Siddhi today, with the day marking the completion of a year, following the launch of his anti-graftmovement.
“We will wait for the passing of the bill till the current session of Parliament comes to an end in May. If it does not happen we will have another one and half year before the next general elections is held,” said Anna Hazare. “I will sit at Ramlila maidan once the 2014 elections are declared with a slogan ‘Lokpal lao nahi to jao’. As I start my agitation, people will pour in before me holding the tricolour,” he added.
Anna Hazare lashed at the UPA government for “dilly-dallying” on the Jan Lokpal issue as elections are not round the corner. He rebuked the government for promising a joint committee that will draft the Bill earlier, when the assembly elections of 5 states were approaching. However, with the elections culminating, the Prime Minister went back on his word and the UPA failed to live up to its word regarding the enactment of the bill.
The social activist repeated that a country-wide tour will be undertaken by Team Anna to gather support for introduction of the ombudsman. He made it clear that his campaign will not be against a particular party. However he stated that he would exhort the civil society not to vote for a party that opposed Jan Lokpal Bill.
