Goa will now have full-fledged Anti-Terrorism Squad equipped to combat any kind of terror attack in the state. The decision was announced by Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar after a high level meeting with the state police department. ATS will be formed, taking into account the fact that Goa is a possible target of terror attack, with a huge influx of foreign travellers, who come to the state as tourists.
“This is a specialised cell which is required for the state. We should have cells like ATS and Coastal Security Police, which are specially made to deter terrorists,” said Parrikar to reporters on Sunday. “I have instructed them not to be rough with the people and also not to skip filing first information report. I don’t mind even if my detection rate is reflected as less due to large number of FIRs filed. I want that each complaint should be investigated with seriousness,” he said.
The Chief Minister has ordered the Home Ministry to clear the state of the menace of drug trade that is rampant on the state’s coastline. The Anti-Narcotic Cell has been directed to collect data on the narcotic trade in the state. The state police of Goa has a bad reputation resting on its shoulders for its neglect in clamping down its rampant drug trade and notorious sex racket.
The Congress government that ruled Goa earlier had suspended the process of installing an ATS. The orders were executed by former Home Minister of Goa, Ravi Naik, stating that the existing police force was more than necessary for counter terror activities of the state.
