“We have too many leaders, that is our problem”, says Sonia Gandhi, President of Congress party that suffered a shocking defeat in the UP assembly elections of 2012. She was addressing the press, as part of her meeting with prominent leaders of the party this morning. All leaders, including Rahul Gandhi were present at the meting convened at her residence at 10 Janpath.

“Maybe the candidates we picked happened to be of a wrong choice. But this loss will not have any impact on the UPA for 2014. I don’t think the results of Assembly elections will damage UPA govt. ” said Mrs Gandhi, adding that they must not forget the victory secured in one state, Manipur. The 403 member UP election saw the Congress party achieve a shocking 28, inspite of the extensive campaigning by Rahul Gandhi.

According to Sonia Gandhi, people of UP were unhappy with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samajwadi Party, because of which they opted for the Samajwadi Party.  She also acknowledged that inflation could have been a factor that led to the abysmal  performance of Congress Party.

“Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh have taken responsibility for the party’s debacle in the two states. The immediate priority for the party is to form the government in Uttarakhand. Captain Amarinder Singh will be meeting Congress president… He has also offered to quit,” said sources related to the party.

Yesterday, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh met Sonia Gandhi offering his resignation, taking up complete responsibility for the miserable loss in Uttar Pradesh.
