In a rejoinder to Rahul Gandhi, Uma Bharti reminded him about his mother Sonia’s background, i.e. from Rome. The remark came from the firebrand BJP leader, when Rahul referred to her as an ‘outsider’. The Congress General Secretary made the remark following BJP’s announcement of Uma Bharti’s candidature.
“I want to remind Rahul Gandhi that his mother is from Rome and she was accepted in India. I am just from Madhya Pradesh. Rahul Gandhi should remember his mother’s background before commenting on his aunt.”
“I also want to remind Rahul that in Madhya Pradesh, I trounced his political guru Digvijaya Singh. I intended to repeat that in Uttar Pradesh since he has cheated people with false promises for a package for Bundelkhand,” she added.
The decision to field Uma Bharti from Charkari in Mahoba district of Bundelkhand was announced by BJP after much speculation. “There was a lot of speculation in the media about Uma Bharti and we have decided that she will contest from Charkari. In fact, I can tell you that she won’t just contest elections, but will also be one of the star campaigners for the party,” said Nitin Gadkari, President of BJP.
Regarding her decision to contest, Uma bharti broached the subject of the development package announced by UPA government.”They had announced a package for Bundelkhand. We are looking for that package, have been unable to find it. Farmers are committing suicide and people from Bundelkhand are working as labourers in Delhi. I do not want to play petty politics, do not want to make such comments. I want to fight elections on serious issues. I am only replying to his comments.” she said.
Rahul Gandhi’s remark on hearing Uma Bharti’s candidature was thus, “A BJP leader has come from Madhya Pradesh. Where was she when farmers were dying in Bundelkhand? Now that elections are here she has come to you.”
