PK Abdu Rabb (Muslim League), Kerala’s Education Minister has stirred up a hornet’s nest, with Kerala’s Education Department issuing a circular directing woman teachers to dress in green blouse along with the traditional Kerala saree. Abdu Rabb is a member of the Indian Union Muslim League, the ally of Congress in the UDF, which rules Kerala currently. The flag of the Muslim League is predominantly green too. Abdu is the same Minister who refused to stay in his official residence as it was named ‘Ganga’, following which it had to be renamed ‘Grace’.
The controversial dress code was in connection with a function, where funds were to be handed over to various Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan centres. The programme was to be presided over by Rabb and 3 other ministers. 4 teachers will represent a particular SSA centre. There are 15 centres in all, which means a total number of 60 teachers will participate in the function. Matters started brewing up when the teachers were asked to dress up in green blouse.
The matter was condemned by Vellapally Natesan, General Secretary of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam. He had called for the immediate cancellation of the circular.
“Who does not know that green is the official colour of the IUML,” said Natesan. The issue has been condemned by Shahjahan, leader of Kerala School Teachers Association. With wide spread protests, the circular was cancelled on Monday.
The matter sparked of a wide ranging controversy with KM Aliaar, District Project Officer of Ernakulam Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan being suspended for having issued the circular.
