19 children hailing from Jharkhand and Odisha were rescued from the ‘Blessing Welfare Society’, where they were confined illegally. ”We found that the children were brought to Kanyakumari by the accused priest Claret from the Blessing Welfare Society located at Sirumugai in Coimbatore district,” said highly-placed sources.  The racket was busted by the Social Welfare Department as they probed further into another rescue operation that took place a few days back, where where 18 children were released from the premises of a church in the Kanyakumari District and 23 Nepal girls from Micheal Job Orphange.

According to sources, Blessing Welfare Society functions as an unauthorized juvenile home in Kovai district. The children who were retained there illegally came to the notice of Coimbatore district police. They inturn alerted the Social Welfare Department. It has been reported that the children were retained there for more than 9 months.

The Blessing Welfare Society is being run by Rajkumar, who has now been placed under judicial custody. He was arrested 3 days ago. “The children were taken from the parents by promising that they  will be given quality education and other facilities. But the children were not even sent to school and were kept confined in a room under inhumane conditions,” said Pradip K Patra, state coordinator of Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS), Odisha. He came down to Tamil Nadu for the retrieval and rescue of the children who were illegally detained.

Earlier, 18 children who were rescued  from a church, were sent back to their native, Odisha. According to B Nalan of the CWC, the children left for Odisha via Chennai. They were rescued by the Tirunelveli Child Welfare Committee was on Wednesday.
