The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena supremo Raj Thackeray has levelled serious allegations on the ruling class for the rise of slums in Mumbai, saying that vested interests were behind their rise. He expressed regret over inaction by political parties for not being stringent with political parties or errant corporators and MLAs.
“The people’s representatives increase slums with the objective of bringing them under the purview of Slum Rehabilitation Act,” alleged Raj Thackeray following his meeting with Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Sitaram Kunte here.”The slums in the city do not rise on their own, they are deliberately increased. Whip is not cracked against those who are responsible for increasing the slums. Concerned ward officers or police officers are not suspended in this connection,” he added.
The MNS chief stated that he would dismiss the person found to be involved in such activities, if he were in his party. Raising alarm at the incompatibility of the island for sustaining the bursting population of Mumbai, he said,”looking at the increasing population of the metropolis there is not enough infrastructure for it,” the MNS chief said.
“The developers and builders should be entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining roads and gardens in their areas which will be beneficial for the people,” said Raj raising the question as to why cooperation of private players was not sought for Mumbai’s development.
